CARMEL ARTOMOBILIA - A Celebration of Automotive Art & Design™

The Carmel Arts& Design District plays host to one of the newest and most noteworthy events in Indianapolis and surrounding areas, the Carmel Artomobilia. For 2013, Artomobilia will feature more than 400 enthusiast and collector cars across more than 26 classes, including Super Car, Exotic, Classic, Sports car, European, Domestic, Vintage and Racers, attracting nearly 15,000 visitors from Carmel and the surrounding areas.

Carmel Artomobilia focuses on display and appreciation over competition and although each of the automobiles is truly magnificent, this event is not just about cars; it's about the art and automotive enthusiasts. The event embraces the essence automotive art and design by uniquely combining the artwork of local galleries and artists, with the presentation of significant automobiles and their iconic design. To that end, select local gallery owners commission a painting each year that features one of the most noteworthy cars presented against the canvas of the District. The artwork is completed during the course of the day, and auctioned off the following evening with proceeds going to a local charity.

Considered by many to be the highlight of the year’s events, Carmel’s Arts & Design District and the Carmel Artomobilia provides an unmatched environment for reaching one of the most desirable demographics in the state. And with nearly a half-mile of automobiles, art, retails, restaurants and vendors Arch-to-Arch, the Carmel Artomobilia promises a fun, yet sophisticated, atmosphere that features all that the District has to offer.

IndyStar covers Artomobilia

Nice write-up on last year's event: http://www.indystar.com/article/20120821/LOCAL01/208230313/Artomobilia-Jaguars-Ferraris-more

The Artomobilia is excited to announce one of the cars that will be presented at the Carmel Artomobilia 2013 on Saturday, August 24th. This car, is a perfect example of our theme: Race Cars: The Art of Innovation.

Jaguar's automotive legend was enhanced at Le Mans during the 1950s, where its initial C-type specialized roadsters first won the 24 Hour race in both 1951 and 1953. For 1954 a far more sophisticated sports racing car was developed, which became known as the D-Type.

Entered at Le Mans as factory team cars in 1954, the first D-types were only narrowly beaten by much larger-engined Ferrari V-12s. Jaguar quickly got its revenge a few weeks later, when the D-types came in first and second at the 12 hours of Reims at an average speed of 104.55 mph. The works team won the 1955 Le Mans, and this was repeated twice more by the private Ecurie Ecosse teams in 1956 and 1957.

This specific car, the XKD530 was initially procured by Curt Lincoln of Helsinki, Finland, from the Finnish Importer S.M.K. in 1956. Lincoln obtained the car for ice racing at Elaintarhanajo. It was fitted with special tires, carrying 60 spikes in each. Lincoln was successful in winning his first race in the over two liter class and competed nearly every Sunday. Timo Makinenin also won several events in Finland with this car.

By 1959, XKD530 was in 'tired' condition and it was returned to Jaguar in Coventry, England, to be rebuilt. It was converted to the new 3.8 liter. The car went on to win the Leningrand Grand Prix, the only outing ever recorded for a D-Type in the USSR!

The current owner purchased the car in 1998. He sent it to CKL Developments in Susex, England, for restoration. It carries its original engine, transmission, chassis frame, monocoque, rear axle and brake calipers among other pieces..

Among many other events it has competed in seven Mille Miglias; 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2009. In addition, XKD530 was invited to Concorso Villa d’Este and the Pebble Beach Concours in 2009 and the Concours at Amelia Island in 2011. It was driven by Rob Hall to a 3rd in class finish at the 2011 Silverstone Classic’s Stirling Moss Trophy race. 530 was later invited to race in the 2011 Goodwood Revival Sussex Trophy finishing 5th of 34 cars. Also competing in the 2012 Goodwood Revival Sussex Trophy driven again by Rob Hall it finished 8th of 29 starters and the 1st D-Type to get the checkered flag.
